Fishing Hotspots Heat Up - KZN REPORT (15 OCT '26)

The KZN Coastline has been producing a healthy mix of edibles, with kob, brusher, stumpnose, grunter, bronze bream, pompano and the occasional black musselcracker featuring in catches. Margate Pier continues to draw attention with quality kob, garrick and even some impressive yellowtail, while live bait remains the top tactic for anglers targeting larger predators. Non-edible action is also building, with sand sharks, grey sharks, spinner sharks, blue rays and diamond rays becoming more prominent as summer approaches.
Offshore, improving sea conditions have opened up productive fishing opportunities. The deeper reefs are producing geelbek, daga salmon, half-kob, rockcod, soldiers and musselcracker, while yellowtail continue to keep anglers busy further north. Perhaps the most exciting development is the arrival of the first couta and increasing reports of pelagic activity, signalling that the summer gamefish season is not far away.
Meanwhile on the freshwater, recent rainfall has improved water levels across much of the Midlands, despite concerns surrounding a developing El Niño later in the season. Trout rivers are flowing strongly again, with anglers reporting steady catches from the Bushmans River, particularly on nymph patterns. Yellowfish anglers are also enjoying productive conditions, while Midlands stillwaters continue to produce quality trout.
Bass fishing is showing strong signs of improvement at Midmar, Albert Falls and other regional waters, with fish becoming increasingly active in the warmer conditions. Reports of excellent tigerfish action at Jozini Dam are also attracting attention from anglers looking for something a little more aggressive.
With favourable weather windows forecast, anglers have every reason to be optimistic heading into the weekend.
