On 22 July 2025, as part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s drive to enhance service delivery and accessibility, MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially unveiled a modern Licensing Centre at Protea Glen Mall in Soweto.
This newly launched facility represents a major milestone in improving the efficiency and convenience of licensing services in the province. Located within the heart of the township, the centre is a key step in the government’s commitment to serve communities in townships, informal settlements, and hostels (TISH) more effectively.
Equipped with advanced technology and designed to offer fast, user-friendly services, the Protea Glen Licensing Centre is expected to reduce long queues and travel times for residents needing driving-related documentation.
Speaking at the unveiling, MEC Diale-Tlabela reaffirmed the department’s commitment to reaching historically underserved communities.
“The rollout of Smart Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) in TISH areas is part of a broader effort to modernise public services and extend frontline regulatory support to where it’s most needed,” she said.
She further noted that the centre was developed with a strong focus on accessibility, innovation, and customer satisfaction, which are critical to improving overall service standards in Gauteng.
“Through careful planning, the use of smart systems, and active involvement from the local community, this centre marks a significant leap forward in our quest to deliver world-class licensing services,” MEC Diale-Tlabela added.
Under the National Road Traffic Act (Act 93 of 1996), the MEC for Roads and Transport is entrusted with overseeing vehicle and driver licensing services in the province. This includes the regulation of driving schools, instructors, number plate manufacturers and embossers, and vehicle registrations—one of the largest and most complex service portfolios in Gauteng.
The launch of this smart centre supports the vision of “Growing Gauteng Through Smart Mobility,” which emphasises modernising transport services to deliver efficient, professional, and accessible public service to all residents.
