Food safety is a critical global concern, according to the World Health Organization food contamination contributes to the deaths of at least 420 000 people annually worldwide. Contaminated food poses a serious threat to public health, and various factors contribute to its prevalence.
In South Africa due to diversity in socioeconomic status it affects both access to safe food and knowledge of proper food handling. Health expert Jason Williams is cautioning the community to exercise caution in food preparation and storage practices calling on government to create more public awareness on the importance of proper hygiene, food handling, and storage practices to minimize the risk of contamination.
He says common causes of foodborne illnesses include bacterial, viral, and parasitic contamination.
