Road accidents costs the country R143 billion each year.

The revelation was made Kobus Labuschagne from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at the National Traffic Indaba currently underway in Durban.

Labuschagne says this represents around 3.4% of the country's total GDP.

He says this figure could be higher as their research shows there is a significant number of accidents that are not reported.
