Maternal deaths have increased among HIV positive mothers in the North West province, despite an overall decrease.

North West MEC for Health, Magome Masike, on Tuesday briefed the media about investigations into maternal, child and infant mortality in the Province. This comes after a study by Saving Mothers North West revealed that maternal deaths had increased.

Masike conceded that maternal deaths had increased among HIV positive mothers, but said overall, there had been a decrease in both child and maternal mortality.

Masike said the department was working on an Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa Campaign to improve health care in the province.
