AI Farmer: Putting an Agricultural Expert in Every Farmer’s Pocket |
South Africa has roughly one agricultural extension officer for every 2,500 farmers. Francois Rossouw, CEO of the Southern Africa Agricultural Initiative (SAAI), explains how AI Farmer closes that gap. It’s a conversational AI advisor built with CohesionX and trained on 8,500 agricultural subcategories. Farmers can speak to it in their own language about livestock disease, pests, irrigation and product application. In one case it traced a goat die-off in the Eastern Cape to a poisoned water source, after two 1,800 km vet trips had failed to find the cause.
Recorded at the CohesionX offices in Pretoria, the conversation also covers why so many AI projects get abandoned, why Francois gives any new AI project three months to show value, and how SAAI staff use the same tools inside the business.
