But South Africa's deaf rugby team plays the game with one crucial difference: when the referee blows his whistle, they won’t hear it.

Instead players rely on flags, hand signals — and each other — to navigate one of the world's most physical sports.

And as International Deaf Awareness Month continues , the team is preparing for the World Championships in Tokyo — with a medal in its sights - and one final financial hurdle to clear.
