Giving the children of New Jerusalem a safe place to play

New Jerusalem Children’s Home was founded 26 years ago, in 2000, initially to create a home for HIV/Aids orphans.
Today, it is home to 120 children.
A preschool was built in 2009 to serve their own children, as well as children from the surrounding community, whose parents pay a monthly fee.
At its peak, the preschool had 120 enrolled children, providing a critical income stream to help sustain the orphanage.
Due to a lack of funds, they were unable to maintain or improve the preschool playground, which has seen enrolment drop to 50 children.
“Parents cite safety concerns. Our 250 m² playground is dilapidated, has no impact surfacing, no shade, and an unsafe old jungle gym,” says Anna.
She had to retrench several ECD teachers, and the home’s income has taken a significant knock.
Our friends at Absa assisted New Jerusalem with the R350 000 needed to upgrade their play area, and today we check in to hear how it’s going.
