The South African Social Security Agency in Gauteng has clarified the qualifying criteria and assessment process for Disability Grant applications, particularly the role of the means test.
The Disability Grant is intended to provide financial assistance to qualifying South African citizens, permanent residents and recognised refugees between the ages of 18 and 59 who are unable to work because of a disability. The current grant amount is R2 400 per month.
SASSA says having a medical condition does not automatically qualify a person for the grant. Applicants must undergo a prescribed medical or functional assessment by a SASSA-appointed medical practitioner to determine whether the disability prevents them from working or supporting themselves.
Applicants must also pass a means test, which assesses their income and assets. For married applicants, the income and assets of both spouses are considered.
