Big Moves - From Aspirations Of Becoming A Teacher, To CEO of R1 Trillion Industry, Meet Zinhle Tyikwe

She once dreamed of becoming a teacher. Instead, Zinhle Tyikwe found herself working as a security guard while chasing her first break in HR. Today, she leads two of South Africa's most influential industry bodies, as CEO of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa and CEO of GS1 South Africa, the nation's official authority on product barcodes.

From Wembezi township near Estcourt to the boardrooms of Eskort, Avis, Bidvest and beyond, Tyikwe's rise wasn't part of any master plan. She saw herself as a people-focused executive, not the one at the top. But when the call came in 2022 to lead a sector employing over 3 million South Africans, one in every five working people in the country, she backed herself to take it.

On this episode of Big Moves, Tyikwe unpacks her unlikely path to the top, the industry moves shaping South African retail, and what it really takes to lead when leadership was never the goal.
