Potholes are a growing concern in South Africa, and their impact is felt strongly by students who commute daily to colleges and universities. Many students drive their own cars, while others depend on Uber or public transport to reach their institutions. Potholes damage vehicles, increase transport costs, and cause delays that affect punctuality and attendance. For students managing tight budgets and schedules, the added burden of repairs or higher fares makes commuting more stressful and directly affects their access to education.
In Midrand, where a large student population travels between campuses, residences, and business hubs, the problem is especially severe. Potholes contribute to traffic congestion and accidents, creating unsafe conditions for drivers and passengers. Uber drivers often raise fares to cover maintenance costs, while public transport operators face similar challenges and pass those expenses onto commuters. This means students end up paying more for unreliable transport, which can discourage attendance and participation in academic activities.
