IN CONVERSATION WITH TSHEPANG SEROKA FROM The Disability Empowerment and Community.

South Africa continues to make progress in recognising and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, yet many still face barriers to accessing education, employment, healthcare, public services and opportunities for meaningful participation in society. Issues such as inaccessible infrastructure, limited employment opportunities, inadequate access to assistive devices, and social stigma remain significant challenges.
Against this backdrop, initiatives that bring together persons with disabilities, caregivers, community organisations, businesses and government departments play an important role in raising awareness, sharing information and connecting people with available support services.

One such initiative is the Disability Empowerment and Community Fun Day, organised by the Disability365 Podcast. The event aims to encourage disability inclusion, community engagement and active citizenship while creating opportunities for people to access information on healthcare, disability support services, entrepreneurship, employment and civic participation.
A key focus is voter education under the theme "Your Vote, Your Voice, Your Power," highlighting the importance of ensuring that persons with disabilities are informed about their democratic rights and are able to participate fully in the electoral process.
The broader conversation extends beyond a single event and raises important questions about what more needs to be done to build communities that are inclusive, accessible and empowering for persons with disabilities.
