IN CONVERSATION WITH MIKE WATERS

Gauteng faces the possibility of a taxi strike amid growing tensions between the provincial taxi industry and the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela. The potential strike has raised concerns about disruptions to public transport and the broader economic impact, given that millions of commuters in Gauteng rely on minibus taxis as their primary mode of transport.
According to the South African National Taxi Council and the National Taxi Alliance, the dispute stems from allegations that the MEC has bypassed established taxi industry structures by engaging directly with individual taxi associations and operators on matters affecting the sector. The organisations argue that this approach undermines recognised representative bodies and established channels of communication within the industry.
Another key point of contention relates to the issuing of operating licences. SANTACO and the NTA have expressed dissatisfaction with the current process, alleging that operators are no longer able to collect their licences individually from regional offices, as was previously the practice. Instead, licences are reportedly being distributed through organised handover ceremonies, which may require operators to travel significant distances to receive their documents.
Industry representatives argue that any delays or complications in the issuing of operating licences could negatively affect taxi operations, regulatory compliance, and service delivery to commuters. They maintain that operators should be able to collect licences as soon as they are ready for issuance.
The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng has indicated that it will write to MEC Diale-Tlabela seeking clarity on the concerns raised by the taxi industry and urging engagement with official taxi bodies. The party has requested a response within seven working days and has called for measures to prevent a potential strike.
The dispute comes at a time when reliable public transport remains critical to Gauteng’s economy. Any large-scale disruption to taxi services could affect workers, businesses, learners, and residents who depend on the taxi industry for daily mobility. Stakeholders are therefore closely monitoring engagements between government and taxi industry representatives in an effort to avoid industrial action and maintain transport stability across the province.
