The Emfuleni Local Municipality has been rocked by a corruption scandal involving a R16 million fleet tender, where full payment was allegedly made for 18 municipal vehicles, but investigators found that only seven were delivered. The case was brought to light by Martha Mani Rantsofu, a municipal financial officer who blew the whistle on the irregularities. Just days after reporting the fraud, Rantsofu was assassinated in Vanderbijlpark in a brazen daylight attack, raising serious concerns about the safety of whistleblowers in South Africa.
The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team has since arrested former fleet manager Lerato Mpholo, who faces charges of fraud and corruption linked to the tender. His bail application has been postponed, and investigators have not ruled out further arrests as the probe continues. The assassination of Rantsofu has intensified scrutiny on Emfuleni’s governance, with police confirming that her complaints were central to exposing the scandal. The case underscores the intersection of corruption and political violence, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protections for whistleblowers who risk their lives to safeguard public funds.
