The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued a public safety advisory after its primary emergency call-taking and dispatch line became temporarily unavailable due to a technical fault.
According to the department, the disruption has been intermittent since Friday, 10 July, affecting the main emergency number 011 375 5918. Technicians are working to restore the service, but in the meantime residents are being urged to use alternative contact channels when reporting emergencies, traffic incidents or by-law enforcement matters.
JMPD says its officers remain fully operational despite the communications disruption, stressing that emergency response services have not been suspended. However, reliable communication remains critical, particularly in a city like Johannesburg where residents depend on rapid reporting of road crashes, violent crime, public disorder, traffic congestion and other emergencies.
The temporary outage also raises broader questions about the resilience of emergency communication systems. Public safety experts have long argued that emergency services require multiple layers of redundancy to ensure the public can always reach first responders during technical failures, power interruptions or periods of exceptionally high call volumes.
