In Conversation With Dennis Bloem- Activists & Citizens

During a media briefing on 6 July 2025, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that criminal elements had infiltrated various parts of South Africa’s criminal justice system. He further claimed that certain politicians and Members of Parliament were interfering in SAPS operations and contributing to instability within the police service.
These allegations have gained renewed attention following evidence presented before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where WhatsApp communications between Julius Malema and businessman Mo Sayed were reportedly discussed by evidence leader Adv Matthew Chaskalson.
According to the Activists and Citizens Forum, the contents of the communications have raised concerns about alleged relationships involving Mr Malema, senior Crime Intelligence officer General Feroz Khan, Mo Sayed and individuals linked to the cigarette industry. The organisation argues that these allegations are serious and could have implications for both Mr Malema’s personal reputation and that of the Economic Freedom Fighters.
The Forum further claims that previous assertions regarding General Khan’s testimony potentially implicating senior political figures appear to be reflected in the evidence currently before the Commission. It maintains that Mr Malema is not the only political figure alleged to have relationships with police officials whose conduct has come under scrutiny.
