Matthew 1–4: The King's Credentials and the Promised Messiah Revealed
The opening chapters of Matthew 1–4 introduce Jesus Christ as the long-awaited Messiah and rightful King of Israel. In this first session of a three-part overview of Matthew's Gospel with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we explore how Matthew carefully presents Jesus' royal genealogy, fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy, virgin birth, baptism, temptation, and the beginning of His public ministry. Every detail demonstrates that Jesus is the promised Son of David, the Son of Abraham, and the fulfilment of God's redemptive plan revealed throughout Scripture.
This episode also examines Matthew's unique structure, showing how the Gospel presents Jesus as the greater Moses and the authoritative King who proclaims the Kingdom of Heaven. Along the way, we consider the significance of the genealogy, the inclusion of Gentiles in God's saving purposes, Christ's victory over Satan in the wilderness, and His call to repentance and discipleship.
Key Scriptures: Matthew | 1–4; Genesis | 12:1–3; 2 Samuel | 7:12–16; Isaiah | 7:14; Deuteronomy | 6:13, 8:3; Matthew | 4:17.
Join us as we begin this journey through Matthew's Gospel and discover why Jesus alone possesses every credential required to be the promised King. May this study deepen your confidence in Scripture and strengthen your devotion to Christ.
