The Gauteng Department of Health has provided clarity on the admission process for involuntary Mental Health Care Users at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital following public enquiries.
Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital is a specialised psychiatric facility that primarily receives patients referred from public healthcare institutions, including district and regional hospitals. Before referral, individuals requiring involuntary mental healthcare must undergo a mandatory 72-hour assessment and observation period as prescribed by the Mental Health Care Act.
Patients who require specialised psychiatric inpatient care after this assessment may then be referred to Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital for further treatment, rehabilitation and specialised mental healthcare services.
