Teen pregnancy rates plunge in SA - but experts are puzzled by the sharp drop

A dramatic decline in teenage pregnancies across South Africa has left researchers both encouraged and searching for answers. A new study published in the South African Medical Journal found births among girls aged 10 to 19 dropped by 16% between 2021 and 2025, with pregnancies among girls aged 10 to 14 falling by nearly 40%. Researchers say the shift reverses years of rising numbers seen across every province. But while the decline appears to be positive news, experts warn the data raises major questions about public health, education planning and gender-based violence trends.
