Biblical Eldership in 1 Timothy 3: Church Leadership, Authority, and Order

God is a God of order, not confusion, and this truth shapes how the local church is to function. In this Theology Tuesday episode with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we examine the biblical role of elders through 1 Timothy | 3 and Titus | 1, seeing how God has designed leadership for the health and maturity of His church. From the unity and distinction within the Godhead (Matthew | 3:16–17) to the clear instruction that “all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner” (1 Corinthians | 14:40), Scripture consistently reveals God’s orderly nature.
Elders—also called overseers and pastors (Acts | 20:17, 28; 1 Peter | 5:1–2)—are tasked with shepherding God’s flock under the authority of Christ, the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter | 5:3–4). Their qualification is primarily one of character (1 Timothy | 3:2–3; Titus | 1:7–9), demonstrating that spiritual leadership is moral before it is structural. They feed, protect, and lead the church, all while knowing they will give an account to God (Hebrews | 13:17; James | 3:1).
At the same time, believers are called to a discerning submission—one that ultimately honours God above all (Acts | 5:29). When Christ remains the Head of the church (Colossians | 1:18), His design produces growth, unity, and maturity (Ephesians | 4:11–12).
Consider carefully how God’s order shapes both leadership and your response within the body of Christ.
