Millions lost to water corruption

Millions of rand meant for South Africa’s water infrastructure have been lost to corruption. The Special Investigating Unit says inflated contracts, irregular appointments and payments for work never done have cost the state dearly. The SIU and the Department of Water and Sanitation have now launched the Water Sector Anti-Corruption Forum to clamp down on graft. Investigations so far have recovered more than R569 million, prevented R717 million in losses, and set aside contracts worth R1.1 billion. Meanwhile, the DA in Tshwane wants a wider probe into alleged corruption linked to the city’s R777 million water tanker spending.
