DA calls for urgent Parliament debate as film industry reels from unpaid rebates

The Democratic Alliance is pushing for a debate of national importance as South Africa’s film and television sector grapples with R663 million in unpaid government rebates. Hundreds of industry professionals are marching to Parliament, warning that the collapse of the Film and Television Incentive Programme is costing jobs and driving productions to countries with more reliable support. The DA says the DTIC has allowed the programme to stall, with the last adjudication panel sitting in March 2024. In a written reply, Minister Parks Tau admitted funding shortages have delayed payments. Phemelo speaks to DA spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition, Toby Chance.
