As South Africa commemorates 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the national conversation has reached a critical point. Over the past week, people across the country have been vocal online and offline, and civil society organisations such as Women For Change have renewed their call for femicide to be declared a national disaster. This growing urgency highlights one thing clearly: young female voices are no longer waiting to be spoken for; they are speaking for themselves.
Additionally, this past week, students at Wits University protested after a SRC member was suspended over rape allegations, igniting campus outrage on issues of safety, accountability and cultural change.
