GUEST: Andy Watts – Owner, The Watts Whisky Company

When you think of South African whisky, one name stands tall, Andy Watts. From his early days as a Yorkshire cricketer to becoming one of the most celebrated master distillers in the world, Watts has spent over four decades defining the country’s whisky story. His pioneering work at The James Sedgwick Distillery and later as Distell’s head of whisky helped put Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships on the global stage earning him a rare and prestigious induction into the Whisky Hall of Fame.

Now at the helm of The Watts Whisky Company, Andy continues to inspire a new wave of South African craft whisky makers, blending tradition, innovation, and sustainability. In this conversation, he joins Gugulethu Mfuphi to reflect on his remarkable journey, the evolution of Africa’s whisky industry, and what it takes to build a legacy that lasts beyond the barrel.
