A 52-year-old teacher from East London in the Eastern Cape has been arrested
for her alleged involvement in human trafficking and prostitution involving
young women.
According to the Hawks, the educator is accused of recruiting women from
various towns in the former Transkei region — including Qumbu, Mthatha,
and Ngqeleni — under false pretences. Investigations reveal that once in East
London, the women were taken to the teacher’s home, where they were
allegedly coerced into sex work.
The probe, which began in September 2023, uncovered that the suspect
charged the women accommodation fees ranging between R250 and R300 per
night, depending on the type of room they occupied. She reportedly kept the
profits from the operation, with clients either paying her directly or depositing
money into her bank account.
The suspect was arrested at her school on Wednesday. She now faces multiple

charges, including human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and operating an
illegal brothel. She is expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s
Court on Thursday, 16 October 2025.
The Hawks’ provincial head, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya,
commended the investigating team for their persistence in uncovering the
trafficking ring. He reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to dismantling criminal
networks that prey on vulnerable individuals.
