he South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has formally instructed media personality Ngizwe Mchunu to immediately stop posting or promoting any content that incites violence or discrimination against the LGBTQI+ community.
According to the Commission, Mchunu’s comments constitute a prima facie violation of the Equality Act. This action follows several complaints alleging hate speech and harassment in connection with remarks he made on social media targeting members of the LGBTQI+ community.
SAHRC spokesperson Wisani Baloyi confirmed that Mchunu has also been ordered to take down all offensive material from his social media pages.
“Mchunu must remove all offending content from his social media platforms and associated channels within 24 hours of receiving the letter. He is also required to issue a public retraction and apology acknowledging the harm caused and commit to refraining from such conduct in the future,” said Baloyi.
The directive comes after Mchunu’s homophobic remarks about same-sex marriage were widely condemned and rejected by the SAHRC, along with calls for accountability from human rights advocates.
