IN CONVERSATION WITH MIKE MORIARTY (MPL DA GAUTENG SHADOW MEC FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT)

The Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) has 43 acting staff members ranging from top posts to lower positions, such as Chief Executive Officers, Chief Financial Officer, Department Managers and payroll officer. Some have been acting for over four years. This once again exposes that Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s government is not serious about service delivery in this province.
This information was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, in a written reply to the DA’s questions tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).
According to MEC Maile, the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) has 12 acting positions, Constitutional Hill has two acting positions of an Operations Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Gauteng Industrial Development Zone (GIDZ) has three acting positions, Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) has 14 acting positions, and The Innovation Hub Management Company has 12 acting positions.

GGDA plays a crucial role in ensuring economic growth in the province, which in turn would lead to more jobs being created. However, with the current trend of the Gauteng Provincial Government not making permanent staff appointments, this will not be carried out properly, as the entity lacks proper leadership, stability, and operational efficiency.
Unemployment in the province is currently at 33.8% and for this to drop, the correct environment needs to be created for job creation to take place.
The DA will be taking this matter up in the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development to determine when the acting appointments will have permanent employees. For the economy to be turbocharged, all entities responsible for job creation must operate like a well-oiled machine.
A DA-led Gauteng provincial government would ensure that all vacancies are filled within 90 days and that acting appointments become a thing of the past. Gauteng residents deserve a government that is fully committed to creating the correct environment for economic growth and job creation to take place.
