Unathi Lutshaba is the Executive Director of the South African
Cultural Observatory (SACO), a national research project hosted
by Nelson Mandela University on behalf of the Department of
Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). In this role, she leads a team that
delivers high-level statistical data, policy-relevant research,
impact assessments, and monitoring and evaluation studies to
inform the development and sustainability of South Africa’s
creative and cultural industries. She manages a dynamic network
of research produced internally and through SACO’s
partners—Rhodes University and the University of
KwaZulu-Natal—as well as by external consultants
