‘SACP not aiming to break alliance with ANC by
contesting 2026 LGE’
The South African Communist Party (SACP) is making
headlines after its General-Secretary, Solly Mapaila,
confirmed that the party intends to contest the 2026
local government elections independently — a major
move that has sparked widespread political debate.
Speaking at a gathering in KwaDlengezwa, Mapaila
emphasized that the decision is not about breaking the
long-standing alliance with the ANC, but rather about
fulfilling a 2022 resolution and ensuring that the party
begins to "exercise power on behalf of the working class
and unemployed."
This comes amid ongoing frustrations within the
Tripartite Alliance, with the SACP accusing the ANC of
failing to implement agreed-upon decisions and calling
out private monopoly capital for undermining public
development.

To unpack the implications of this move and what it
could mean for South Africa’s political landscape
heading into 2026, we’re joined by Mr Mighty Madasa, a political analyst to help us unpack
this developing story
