‘We’ve Seen This Movie Before'

With the 2021/2022 DStv Premiership season well underway, it is no surprise to see reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns sitting at the top of the log, with SuperSport United, Stellenbosch FC, and Orlando Pirates finishing off the top 4. Shockingly enough, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs find themselves in 13th position and have only managed to secure four points from a possible twelve; winning and having drawn one game, with two back-to-back losses. Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has been criticized in the media for being too defensive-minded, often fielding defensive players over offensive players. Yes, defensive players are needed, but a balance between the two is crucial for certain playing styles. Speaking on the SL Podcast’s The Carwash, former Mamelodi Sundowns, and Ajax Cape Town goalie Sean Roberts, and former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise both dive deep into the problems Chiefs are facing and ask the big questions. Both Sean and Teko agree that things need to be switched up a bit, ‘players are out of position which then brings on frustration’ says Teko Modise, who continues to say ‘we’ve seen this movie before” when discussing the matter of the defensive line-up Chiefs have chosen to go with. All of this comes after Chiefs were embarrassed by newly promoted side Royal AM, losing 4-1 over the weekend. ‘Chiefs had control up until the 20th minute or so’ says Teko. Both Sean and Teko agree that if experience is proving to bring issues, then go to youth and bring in youngsters, especially in defense.

On the latest episode of The Carwash, former Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town goalie Sean Roberts, and former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise discuss the ongoing problems Kaizer Chiefs are facing, offering a neutral perspective. The crew also gives thanks to Bongani Khumalo for his service to the game after hearing about the Bafana Bafana legends' retirement.
