“Molefi Needs A Core Team”

With the recent announcement of the Bafana Bafana squad which is set to face Ghana & Sudan in crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the selection of out-of-favour Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, as well as a host of debutants has come under question. Ntseki has been left with a difficult task in his preparation for the fixtures, as many of his usual choices have struggled for playing time and injuries throughout the 2020/21 season. Star players such as Brighton forward Percy Tau & Rangers midfielder Bongani Zungu haven’t been at their best this season, but former national team star Teko Modise believes that Ntseki should stick with the same key players that helped Bafana to victories against Sudan & Sao Tome.

Speaking on the SL Podcast’s “The Carwash”, Modise argued “As a national team coach, after six games you should have an idea of your core team, you can’t be chopping and changing every time you’re playing a different team. You can’t [always] have a different selection just because somebody’s on form. If you have a core for the team, then you add on wherever you can, if you have a gap. That’s the mentality of a team that wants to win and progress. A team that wants to please everybody changes every time someone’s on form. So if you score against Kaizer Chiefs, next week you’re in the Bafana team, we’ve seen this happening so many times.”

In the full podcast, the Carwash crew discuss Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns’ contrasting form in the CAF Champions League, fans still being barred from stadiums under level 1 lockdown regulations, and more. Use the player above to stream and download.
